Husnu Suood, President of the Maldives Bar Association, has said that the Supreme Court should review its judgement on the Dheebaajaa case.

The Supreme Court has recently ordered the state to pay MVR 348 million to Dheebaajaa Investment for compensation over the termination of their agreement.

Dheebaajaa signed an agreement with the Economic Ministry in 2010 to develop transport services in the northern province, but the agreement was terminated in 2013 after the transport ministry failed to fulfill its obligations.

While the Civil Court ruled in Dheebaajaa’s favor, the state claimed that the company had violated their agreement and appealed in 2015, resulting in High Court overturning the lower court’s verdict.

The Supreme Court has stated that the state had appealed to the High Court after the specified deadline. In response, the state attorney stated that the reason for the delay is due to the Civil Court giving them the trial report late and due to the irresponsibility of the state attorneys at the time.

The apex court stated that the High Court had violated procedures by accepting the appeal after the deadline and therefore overturned its verdict and ordered the stated to pay Dheebaajaa MVR 348 million.

The Supreme Court judges who presided over the case are Chief Justice Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi, Judge Abdulla Areef, and Judge Adam Mohamed Abdulla.
