The Maldives Police Service (MPS) must reveal updates in the investigation into writer Yameen Rasheed’s murder, said renowned lawyer Husnu Suood.

At the panel discussion conducted by Transparency Maldives, where Suood was a panelist, he said that the murder is one that carries public stakes and therefore the police are obliged to share critical information with the writer’s family, including possible obstructions to the investigation.

Suood further said he personally does not believe that the investigation is being carried out adequately and has therefore failed to provide their legally mandated service to Yameen’s family.

He further said that the police have a responsibility to inquire as to what the concerns of the family are and to safeguard them. Instead, Suood said he sees the state trying to delaying findings and in other ways causing possible obstruction to their own investigation.

The police have arrested seven individuals for Yameen’s murder, one of them being a lawyer accused of trying to obstruct the investigation.

While two suspects were remanded earlier this week, the lawyer – Ali Shah – has been released to house arrest.

Yameen was found stabbed over thirty times in his head, chest, and neck on 23rd April.

Husnu Suood has previously served as a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, the cheif justice of the Civil Court, and even Attorney General.
