Maldives’ unicameral parliament, the People’s Majlis, has completed first readings for a number of key legislations.
The Majlis heard introductions for the Heritage Bill, Competition Bill, Fishermen’s Bill, Consumer Protection Bill, Pesticides Use Bill, and Interim Justice Bill.
The Heritage Bill, a draft legislation on preserving heritage items and culture was proposed by North-Galolhu MP Eva Abdulla.
The Competition Bill, which seeks to regulate competition and ensure fair practices among local businesses, was proposed by Central-Henveiru MP Ibrahim Mohamed Didi.
The Fishermen’s Bill, which seeks to regulate the local fishing industry and stakeholders in it, was proposed by Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed Hussain.
The Consumer Protection Bill was proposed by West-Maafannu MP Mohamed Falaah, while the Pesticides Use Bill was proposed by Felidhoo MP Ahmed Marzooq.
The Interim Justice Bill, part of the current government’s pledges reform to ensure accountability and foster trust in state institutions, was proposed by MP Imthiyaz Fahmy.
The first readings for amendments to the Decentralization Act, Anti-Corruption Commission Act, Audit Act, and Elections Commission Act, was also completed at Sunday sitting.
