ADK Hospital has host the first Spine Conference and broadcast a live surgery on a patient.

Over 100 doctors, both local and foreign, attended the conference, which was concluded successfully, along with the surgery.

A team of doctors including Dr. Abdullah Niyaf, Chief Medical Officer at ADK, Dr. Shan, orthopedic surgeon and doctors from USA were active in the surgery, which began at 0800hrs Saturday morning.

Speaking to Raajje.mv regarding the surgery and conference, ADK Managing Director Ahmed Af’aal said that a total of 100 doctors from America, Sri Lanka, India and Nepal had attended the conference.

Af’aal said that the conference was held to inculcate recent developments in spinal surgery to the Maldives.

“The disc was from a patient who had spinal issues, we removed the natural disc from the neck. It’s a total replacement,” he said.

The conference is a joint partnership with the hospital and Maldives National University (MNU). The surgery was shown live in MNU Conference Hall and ADK School of Health Sciences classes.

Af’aal said this was a first for the Maldives and a rare event for the region. Therefore, he said this will be beneficial for students and the health sector.
