80% of vehicles stop at zebra crossings
Police had conducted a month-long programme in which officers at zebra crossings with the most traffic had instructed vehicles to stop for pedestrians

Police station inspector Mohamed Waheed has said that 80% of vehicles stop at zebra crossings.

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s Khabaru Feethaa show, Waheed said the police had conducted a month-long programme in which officers at zebra crossings with the most traffic had instructed vehicles to stop for pedestrians.

Waheed said that officers had also instructed pedestrians to stop for vehicles during the programme, the result of which is that almost all vehicles now stop at zebra crossings.

Also on the show, chief station inspector Mohamed Hassan said that young and reckless drivers are one of the main causes of road accidents and that such accidents can only be reduced by taking personal responsibility when driving.

He said that officers stop and advice drivers who violate the regulations and penalize them when necessary.

53 road accidents were recorded in March, and the transport ministry is now enforcing a helmet rule on the Sinamale’ bridge due to the increasing number of accidents.
