Officers of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) have searched 315 vehicles in a traffic operation conducted in Addu City.

The MPS said that six vehicles had been subject to penalty for violation of traffic regulations.

The ‘Dhuveli Matha’ operation, which translates to ‘Deceleration’ or ‘Speed Control’ covered every district of the city and every officer of MPS’ branch in Addu City had been part of it.

Officers had searched vehicles for the required documentation – which includes stickers that certify recent road worthiness inspections, insurance, and annual fees.

The operation was also aimed at ensuring road safety as officers had placed barricades and check posts to stop and penalize those who violate the speed limit or in other ways display reckless driving.

Addu City’s link road, the second longest highway in the country, is often the site of deadly accidents and three have occurred in the city this week.

A similar police operation last month had penalized 11 drivers and searched 492 vehicles.
