Addu City Mayor Abdulla Sadiq has requested the city’s construction companies to make their sites safer.

The Mayor has said that regional officers will begin monitoring the safety of Addu City construction sites.

Mayor Sadiq said this after the National Planning and Infrastructure publicized the new guidelines on construction sites.

According to the new guidelines, construction companies will be fined half a million Rufiyaa if they violate safety regulations.

If the project costs over MVR 1.5 million, companies are required to educate workers on ensuring the safety of the employees and the public, implement the health and safety guidelines within 90 days, and formulate a plan for emergency situations. Companies are also required to have an employee tasked with maintaining the safety of the sites.

The safety of construction sites has become a national issue after the death of eight-year-old Rawshan Jian, who succumbed to injuries after being struck by a cement bag that fell from a construction site in Male’ City.
