He is running unopposed

Lawyer Hassan Latheef, who is running for the post of chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has on Tuesday started a door to door campaign in the capital Male’ City.

Even though Latheef is running unopposed, he has been carrying out campaign activities since announcing his candidacy.

As part of his door to door campaign, Latheef visited houses in the Henveiru district of Male’ on Tuesday. He met with members of MDP, calling on them and seeking their opinions.

He also inquired them on their opinion regarding the party’s future.

Speaking after the campaign, Latheef said his goal is to meet with as many members of the party as possible, adding that he intended to travel to the islands as well.

I am not able to travel to all the islands. But I will try my best to go to as many as possible,” he said.

Latheef said that the main question he wanted to ask party members “is regarding the party’s future.” He said that he sees “a bright future” for MDP.

Furthermore, Latheef said the biggest concern of the party members he met with, is that party leader, former President Mohamed Nasheed “might not be able to compete in the upcoming presidential elections in 2018.”

Latheef said that as chairperson, freeing Nasheed would be his highest priority, and ensuring that he is able to run for presidency.

Hassan Latheef is part of Nasheed’s legal team. Nasheed was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment on a terrorism charge, in March 2015.

Earlier on Tuesday, it was revealed that the police have forwarded a case to the Prosecutor General’s Office, seeking fresh terrorism charges against him, over the arrest and detention of President Abdulla Yameen, in 2010.
