Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim has called for jailed former president Abdulla Yameen’s release.

He said this while speaking at the campaign launching ceremony for JP’s North Henveiru candidate Alhan Fahmy on Friday night.

Speaking at the event, Qasim, one of the leaders of the government coalition, said that Yameen should not be detained for the rest of his trial and repeatedly called for his release.

He said that authorities have unlawfully jailed Yameen while claiming not be authoritarian and that he is concerned that the court has made such a decision without a police intelligence report.

The Criminal Court ordered Yameen to be detained for the rest of his trial on a state money-laundering charge in February, after the Prosecutor General (PG)’s office stated that he had been offering bribes to witnesses to change their testimonies.

While it has been 18 days since his detention, Yameen has been hospitalized three times over chest pains.
