The powerhouse in Makunudhoo island in Haa Dhaal atoll lacks the capacity to adequetely supply power to the entire island, its local government council has said.
Council president Mohamed Shakir on Monday told RaajjeMV that the island, which has a population of just over 1,800,has been experiencing frequent power outages for about two months now.
Shakir said that the island currently has one 230 kilowatt generator and a 200 kilowatt generator, two of which together can’t supply enough power for the island.
Shakir further said the frequent power outages have been a point of concern, and that the council has received complaints of damage to electrical appliances.
The council revealed in Monday’s interview that Makunudhoo’s fish market, storage facilties, and the Maldives National Defence Force’s radar system are not currently powered.
Shakir said that they will need ‘two more high-capaicty’ generators if they are to do so, adding that ‘only then’ will Makunudhoo’s power situation be resolved.
