Most residents of Makunudhoo island in Haa Dhaalu atoll have gone most of Ramadan without access to staple food items – sugar, rice, and flour – and gas.
The island’s council told RaajjeMV that they had stopped receiving said supplies after the first few days of Ramadan, which began on the 27th of May.
An official from the council confirmed that the cause of said shortage is caused by their usual supply boat seizing routes to Makunudhoo.
While households have relied upon each other to sustain demand for these commodities, with some homes having managed to acquire food supplies from neighbouring islands, the council is reportedly in talks with Kulhudhuffushi island – in the same atoll – to resolve the matter.
The council said that the shortage of staple food maybe resolved soon, they are yet unsure about prospects of acquiring gas.
The State Trading Organization has been working to establish a storage facility on the island. The council official was hopeful that this could potentially resolve the ongoing shortage.
