Police have begun investigating the fire incident that razed the powerhouse in Ukulhas of Alifu Alifu Atoll.

The council released a statement on Wednesday that up to ‘ninety percent’ of the island’s power house, where its electricity generators are kept, had been damaged in the fire.

The powerhouse was set ablaze during an accident while employees of the State Electricity Company (STO) had been doing welding work to make the premises ‘sound proof’.

The fire had destroyed the 120-kilowatt generator and damaged panel boards and cables at the powerhouse.

A total of six people inside and near the powerhouse had been treated for smoke inhalation after the incident. However, all of them have been released.
