President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has sent a message of condolence to US President Donald Trump, following the death of the country’s former President George H.W Bush.
George Bush, the 41st president of the United States and the father of the 43rd, died on Friday at his home in Houston, USA. He was 94.
In his message, President Solih extended condolences to Bush’s family, government and people of the United States on behalf to the government and people of Maldives.
“President Bush was an exemplary statesman whose long years of public service from naval aviator to congressman to Ambassador to the UN and subsequently Vice President and President of the United States displayed an exceptional character marked by courage, perseverance and an overwhelming sense of duty,” said President Solih.
Further noting that the late former president’s “interventions were instrumental in securing United States assistance for post-Tsunami reconstruction in the Maldives,” President Solih added that President Bush “holds a special place in the hearts of Maldivians”.
President Bush, along with former President Bill Clinton, visited tsunami-affected communities in the Maldives in 2005 following the devastation caused by the Asian Tsunami of 2004.
