Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO)’s damaged excavator has prevented boats from transporting waste to Thilafushi island.
A few of the crewmen told RaajjeMV that they have been waiting at the Thilafushi harbor after being unable to empty the waste transported from Male’ and the resorts.
Boats that arrived early Saturday morning remain waiting in the island, while some left after dumping the waste by hand.
WAMCO’s director Ali Moosa said that their excavator used to dump the waste from the boats have been disabled due to a damaged pipe and that they are working on repairs.
Responding to rumors that many of WAMCO’s vehicles have been damaged, Moosa said that the company has many vehicles and because of this they always have vehicles in need of repair. He added that there has never been a situation where a damaged vehicle caused a halt in their services.
USD 100 million was allocated in last year’s state budget to develop a waste management system in Thilafushi.
