An unidentified boat has run aground a patch of reef near an uninhabited island in Gaaf Alif atoll.

Information Officer of Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), Captain Ibrahim Azim said that officers of the MNDF have begun work to re float a vessel that had reportedly run aground a patch of reef near Hagevillaa, an uninhabited island in Gaaf Alif atoll on Thursday.

Azim said that the incident had been reported to the MNDF at around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

According to the information officer, no one was onboard the vessel when a coastguard harbor craft had reached the area to inspect the vessel. He went on to say that there was a crater at the bottom of the vessel and it was flooding when they had reached.

MNDF further revealed that they are working to figure out if the vessel is an international one or one that belongs to a Maldivian company.
