A container ship attempting to rescue another that had collided into the reef of Kulhudhuffushi island in Haa Dhaal atoll has gotten entrapped in the reef as well.

Sources report that the vessel, which did not have any cargo onboard, had collided due to the choppy sea conditions caused by heavy winds in the area.

The ship, Samalaju 787, had collided into the Western end of the island’s reef. The second ship – Haplee Two – has managed to free itself of the reef and is continuing to assist Samalaju 787.

Turbulent weather across the country has caused similar incidents in other parts of a country. While a fishing vessel travelling to Omandhoo island in Alifu Dhaalu atoll - carrying five individuals - had capsized, a speed boat had sunk after strong waves caused a crack in its hull. The boat was travelling from Baa to Lhaviyani atoll with three passengers.

The Maldives National Defence Force has confirmed that no one has been injured thus far.

Further, while several farms in Thoddoo island have been damaged, two-thirds of Naddellaa island was flooded due to heavy rainful.

A tornado had also swept through Addu City’s Hithadhoo region, destroying 13 houses and displacing its residents.
