Elections Commission (EC) has said it is receiving complaints on some parties committing fraud during the re-registration process for September’s presidential election.
In a press release on Wednesday, EC asked that citizens be cautious of such fraud while re-registering.
In the press release, EC also noted the support political parties are giving to the commission in its work to help citizens who wish to vote in locations different to where they are currently registered to.
Mariya Ahmed Didi, the spokesperson of the opposition coalition parties’ presidential candidate, has recently voiced concern that ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) is using re-registration forms different to the ones being distributed by the EC to re-register people.
Mariya said that, during the opposition’s door-to-door campaigns, they found out that PPM has been handing out completely different re-registration forms.
Citizens are allowed to re-register their voting locations until August 11.
