Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has begun his door-to-door campaign.
Solih, who is also the Joint Opposition parties’ candidate, began visiting houses in capital Male’ City on Saturday morning.
After a ceremony at the MDP campaign site, Solih first visited houses at Henveiru ward.
His spokesperson, Mariya Ahmed Didi, criticized the ruling party’s door-to-door campaign, saying that MDP is not conducting their own campaign just out of obligation.
Videos of government officials being lambasted by residents during their door-to-doo campaign have gone viral online.
“We are visiting friendly houses. We also ask for permission before entering. We don’t carry a pass and forcefully try to enter houses out of obligation,” said Mariya Didi.
At the ceremony before starting the campaign, Solih expressed his hope that the Joint Opposition’s work will allow them to win by a huge margin but added that they have to work hard in the next few months.
“We want a day where we won’t have to live in fear in our country. God willing, our work will see us winning easily.”
Solih was elected with 791 votes at MDP’s third party congress.
