A telecommunication tower set up near the power house in Olhuvelifushi island has been struck by lightning, causing a power outage there on Wednesday.

Mohamed Asim, president of the Lhaviyani atoll island’s local government council, told RaajjeMV that it rained heavily in the island and they had experienced lightning strikes.

Asim said that power was restored nearly 12 hours later at about 8:30 AM on Thursday. He further said that the council’s network has been down since the incident, and that some of there electronic equipment has been damaged.

The councilor further said that he and his colleagues are working to ascertain the scope of the damage and could not confirm whether or not anyone was injured or if any further property had been damaged.  

Maldives is currently experiencing its ‘Hulhangu’ monsoon season, characterized by hot winds blowing from the south west and short showers.

On Thursday, the Maldives Meteorological Services announced that that Shaviyani and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls will experiences heavy rain with chances of thunderstorms.
