A lightening strike to a telecommunications tower at Villingili island in Gaafu Alif atoll has caused copious damage to property. 

Musthafa Mohamed, president of the island's council, said that the strike had cut services and caused damage to a number of electronic devices.

Musthafa also said that local telecommunications provider Oredeoo Maldives' services had been temporarily unavailable. 

The total cost of the damage exceeds MVR 300,000, Musthafa said. 

The council has reached out to the state-run National Disaster Management Center, which ordinarily provides compensation for such loss. 

Musthafa said that they are yet to receive a response from the center.
