Member of Parliament for South Galolhu, Meekail Ahmed Naseem, has alleged that the decision to increase the salaries of the Chief Justice, cabinet ministers, and local council members is a calculated move to exert influence over the Ras Male' project.
Speaking at Wednesday's parliamentary sitting, MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem alleged that influence is being exerted over the heads of the three branches of state to prevent opposition to the Ras Male' project. Meekail further accused the government of "buying off" the leadership of the three branches to ensure they do not speak out against Eagle Hills.
Furthermore, MP Meekail stated that the entire state apparatus was being bought off, including a significant portion of the media, which serves as the fourth pillar of democracy.
The heads of the three branches of state are being bought off and tucked deep into the pockets of the President. Honorable Speaker, the Chief Justice and the leadership of the Parliament are being consolidated under his control. Honorable Speaker, the three powers of the Maldivian state are being swept up all at once. Even the media, which we refer to as the fourth pillar of the state—half of those journalists are currently in Dubai. They are being hosted in five-star hotels, Honorable Speaker, provided with keyboards and laptops to write headlines claiming that this project is flawless and that the Maldives needs no other initiative but this. Honorable Speaker, the entire Maldivian state is being bought out.Meekail Ahmed Naseem
Meekail stated that the Maldivian state is being sold into the hands of a foreign billionaire by exploiting the very representatives elected by the people.
MP Meekail stated that this issue is not affiliated with any specific political party, asserting that those who fail to speak out against it should no longer face the public. He further urged citizens to teach a firm lesson to any representatives who remain silent on this project.
The People's Majlis has passed a resolution to increase the allowances of the Chief Justice, bringing the total monthly remuneration to MVR 95,125.
