Former Home Minister Sheikh Imran Abdulla has stated that a public referendum should be held before proceeding with planned developments in Ras Male', following growing concerns over reports that a significant portion of the area is being permanently granted to the company Eagle Hills.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Sheikh Imran stated that the Maldives' unity, peace, and security are built upon the nation's religion, language, and heritage. He further asserted that the current actions being pursued by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration pose a grave threat, raising serious questions about the country's continued existence, independence, and sovereignty.
He expressed concern that if current developments continue as planned, the Maldivian people could face the prospect of subjugation within a short period or in the coming years.
Furthermore, Sheikh Imran stated that any initiative to settle individuals of diverse religions, cultures, and ethnicities in the Maldives must only proceed after consulting the Maldivian public. He specifically emphasized that the settlement of Zionist Jews in the Maldives would be unacceptable to the people, noting that the Constitution of the Maldives explicitly mandates that only Sunni Muslims can hold Maldivian citizenship.
Sheikh Imran stated that for these reasons, all aspects of the government's planned project in Ras Male' should only proceed after a public referendum. He further noted that President Muizzu has significantly streamlined the processes for conducting public consultations and referendums.
