Former Member of Parliament for the Funadhoo constituency, Mohamed Shahid, has expressed concern over the prolonged delay in completing the Sh. Lhaimagu harbor project. Despite 95 percent of the work being finished during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, the project remains incomplete as the current government approaches its third year in office.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Vaudhunaama" program, Shahid stated that during his visit to Lhaimagu, President Muizzu had pledged to ensure the uninterrupted progress of ongoing projects. Shahid noted that by the end of President Solih’s administration, the harbor project was the only remaining initiative left unfinished in the island.
Shahid also stated that 95 percent of the harbor project had already been completed during President Solih's administration.
With the harbor project 95 percent complete, it has now been three years with the remaining five percent still outstanding, yet the authorities have not lifted a finger. It seems things are moving at quite a "rapid" pace.Mohamed Shahid
Shahid further stated that President Muizzu's remarks should be interpreted as the exact opposite of what he says.
The Sh. Lhaimagu harbor project was officially mobilized on December 7, 2020. Under the scope of this project, the harbor basin will be dredged to a volume of 31,000 cubic meters. The development also includes the construction of a 350-meter breakwater, a 500-meter revetment, and a 276-meter quay wall, alongside the installation of 1,380 square meters of paved harbor area.
The modernization of the Lhaimagu harbor remains a significant aspiration for the island's residents. The current harbor's limited size and shallow basin have caused substantial difficulties for vessels navigating the area. Once upgraded to modern standards, the new harbor is expected to provide immense relief and convenience for the public, streamlining travel and maritime transport for the community.
