The Maldives Police Service has launched a special operation to intercept and take stringent action against repeat offenders who engage in dangerous driving, citing concerns over public safety and the fear such actions instill in the community.
As part of this initiative, the police have now commenced efforts to identify and profile individuals who operate vehicles dangerously.
Police have announced that individuals engaging in such behavior will be summoned to the station and cautioned. For repeat offenders, authorities have decided to initiate criminal investigations without further notice, in addition to the fines previously imposed under traffic laws and regulations. Furthermore, the police stated that they will begin publicly disclosing the identities of repeat offenders who engage in dangerous driving.
Under this special operation, police will prioritize taking action against individuals who drive recklessly in a zigzag pattern that endangers others, modify vehicles to increase exhaust noise, or cause sparks by dragging metal components against the pavement. Furthermore, strict enforcement will target those who fail to slow down at speed breakers and continue to drive at high speeds.
Furthermore, strict measures will be taken against individuals who engage in unauthorized racing or stunts, perform dangerous overtaking, drive under the influence, or attempt to flee after being signaled to stop by the police.
Under this initiative, authorities have decided to identify reckless drivers and take legal action against both the operator and the vehicle owner. Consequently, vehicles involved in dangerous driving will be impounded by the police for a period of 30 days. Police further stated that any impounded vehicles not reclaimed by their owners within the designated timeframe will be disposed of in accordance with established procedures.
Police further noted that employees of government institutions and state-owned enterprises have been found to be involved in such dangerous activities. Consequently, the police are currently in the process of sharing relevant information with the respective institutions to ensure that necessary administrative actions are taken against those involved.
Emphasizing the need for public cooperation in ensuring road safety, the police stated that they will take necessary legal action against reckless driving. Authorities encouraged citizens to share photos and videos of such incidents, noting that penalties will be enforced once the authenticity of the submitted material is verified.
