Decision to cut vehicle fee revenue previously allocated to council is a significant blow to the decentralized administration of Male': Mayor

Mayor Adam Azim has warned that recent amendments to the Land Transport Act, which divert vehicle fee revenue away from the council, will severely hinder essential services such as road maintenance and mosque upkeep in Malé. Expressing concern that these changes undermine the decentralization system, the Mayor urged the government to restore the council's financial autonomy to ensure the continued delivery of public services.

Male' City Mayor Adam Azim has stated that the decision to cut vehicle fee revenue previously allocated to the council is a significant obstacle to the decentralized governance of the capital city.

In a post on X, Azim stated that the recent amendments to the Transport Act will significantly hinder the services provided by the Male' City Council and create substantial obstacles for the residents of the capital.

The revenue generated from vehicle fees has been a primary source of funding for essential public services. These include the maintenance of Malé’s roads and mosques, flood mitigation efforts, and the provision of emergency assistance to citizens during disasters. Additionally, these funds are utilized for critical community services, such as street sweeping and general urban upkeep.

Azim expressed deep concern, stating that cutting these funds from the council would bring essential public services to a standstill. He warned that such a move would cause irreparable harm to the general welfare of Male' and significantly diminish the quality of life for its residents.

Furthermore, Azim urged the government to review recent amendments to the Transport Act and the Land Acquisition Act to align with the spirit of decentralization. He called for the restoration of the financial autonomy and powers that the Male' City Council is entitled to, in the interest of the city's residents.

Despite Azim’s remarks, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu ratified the Land Transport Bill on August 31. The new legislation mandates the establishment of a dedicated office named Greater Male’ Transport and Mobility, along with an advisory board and a specialized fund, to oversee land transportation within the Male’ region.
