Government ordered halt to Council's work at old Jamaluddin site because it does not want to facilitate public convenience: Mayor Azim

While the Ministry maintains that the land is slated for the development of a parking facility and a public square, the Mayor clarified that the Council's primary objective was to ensure the site remains clean and well-maintained for the community.

Male' City Mayor Adam Azim has stated that the Housing Ministry's order to immediately halt the City Council's ongoing work at the former Jamaluddin School site was a deliberate move to obstruct efforts aimed at providing public convenience.
The Ministry issued a formal letter to the Council on Tuesday, ordering an immediate halt to all ongoing activities at the former Jamaluddin School site. In the letter, the Ministry noted that it had observed unauthorized work being carried out by the Council on the premises, clarifying that the land has never been officially allocated for the Council's use. Consequently, the Ministry has demanded that all operations at the site cease immediately.
Speaking to RaajjeTV regarding the matter, Mayor Azim stated that the City Council's sole objective is to ensure the area remains clean. The Mayor further noted that their efforts are focused on sanitizing the premises and preventing individuals from entering the site to engage in illicit activities.
The Mayor stated that the council had requested permission in 2024 to lower the perimeter walls and maintain the vacant plot following public concerns regarding illicit activities and illegal dumping at the site. He further noted that the current administration’s order to halt these ongoing improvements demonstrates a lack of interest in the well-being and convenience of the citizens.
The Ministry of Housing has stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has designated the site for the development of a recreational public square featuring an underground parking facility. The Ministry noted that the President's Office issued a directive in February 2024 to develop an underground parking area specifically for motorcycles, a park for children and families, and a General Practitioner (GP) clinic on the premises.
Addressing the matter, the Mayor stated that there are no obstacles preventing the Ministry from proceeding with the project. The Mayor further noted that while the current administration has failed to provide ease for the public, they are now attempting to obstruct others from doing so by offering various excuses.
