The foundation stone has been laid for a grand mosque in Hulhumale', commissioned to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the Maldives' conversion to Islam.
A special ceremony was held in Hulhumale' on Sunday afternoon to lay the foundation stone for the new mosque. The event was attended by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed.
Named after Sultan Mohamed Bin Abdullah, this mosque boasts a minimum capacity of 10,000 worshippers. The complex is designed as a multi-functional hub, housing dedicated educational, cultural, and community centers. The facility further includes administrative offices for imams and staff, an Islamic library, a cultural center, and a museum dedicated to the Holy Quran. Additional amenities feature a multipurpose community hall, an Islamic bookstore, and an exhibition hall.
Speaking at the ceremony, Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed stated that the mosque complex will feature centers dedicated to showcasing the history of the Maldives' conversion to Islam. The Minister further noted that while the project includes several waqf initiatives, the primary goal is to complete the construction of the mosque within a maximum of two years.
This will be one of the largest mosques ever developed in the Maldives. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs stated that this project, located in Hulhumale' Phase II, is set to be the most comprehensive and significant undertaking of its kind in the country to date.
