The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has urged the public to take proactive measures to mitigate potential damage from flooding, as heavy rainfall continues to affect various regions across the Maldives.

According to information released by NDMA, eight residents from a household in Feydhoo have been relocated to temporary shelter after severe flooding caused by the ongoing torrential rain rendered their home uninhabitable.

In addition to Feydhoo, flooding has been reported in two houses in Maradhoo, Addu City.

The authority reported that heavy, continuous rainfall is affecting Addu City, Fuvahmulah City, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, and Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, as well as several atolls in the central Maldives. The NDMA highlighted that significant flooding has occurred across large areas of Fuvahmulah City in particular.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the Maldives Police Service, and local councils are working tirelessly to drain floodwaters from islands affected by the ongoing heavy rainfall.

Furthermore, relevant authorities are actively placing sandbags and implementing additional precautionary measures to prevent floodwaters from entering homes, shops, and offices.

The Maldives Meteorological Service has forecasted that adverse weather conditions will persist across the country over the next 24 hours. In light of this, NDMA has urged the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions against potential maritime hazards and flooding.
