A white alert has been issued for a large part of the Maldives as weather conditions deteriorate across the country.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a white alert for the region spanning from Baa Atoll to Addu City, effective from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. this Wednesday.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has forecast widespread rain and thunderstorms across the country over the next 24 hours, with heavy downpours expected in some islands. The office further stated that winds are expected to prevail from the west and northwest at speeds between 15 to 25 mph, with gusts potentially reaching 45 to 50 mph during showers.
The National Meteorological Service has warned of rough seas, with wave heights expected to reach between 5 and 8 feet. Additionally, the agency noted a possibility of tidal flooding during high tide hours.
The onset of the southwest monsoon consistently brings varying degrees of damage to the capital, Malé City, as well as the outlying islands. Heavy rainfall frequently leads to severe flooding, resulting in water entering households and damaging property. Additionally, strong winds cause hazardous incidents such as uprooted trees and roofs being blown off buildings. The season also sees a significant rise in maritime incidents across the country.
Relevant authorities have therefore urged all parties to exercise special caution and remain vigilant regarding the prevailing weather conditions.
