The Hulhudheli Island Council has expressed concern over significant delays in the construction of a new mosque and its inadequate capacity, which fails to accommodate the island's growing population. Highlighting a lack of communication from the government regarding the project's progress, the Council President noted that work has stalled at the preliminary stage of site clearing.

The Hulhudheli Island Council has expressed concern over the sluggish progress of the island's construction project, noting that work is moving at a snail's pace.

Expressing his concern, Hulhudheli Council President Ahmed Nasru stated in an interview with RaajjeTV that the land for this project was allocated during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration. He further noted, however, that physical work on the project only commenced after the current government took office.

However, Nasr expressed concern that the project continues to progress at a snail's pace, even as President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration approaches the two-and-a-half-year mark. He further noted that current work is limited merely to clearing weeds from the site.

Nasru further stated that the current administration does not engage in any consultation with the council. He noted that they have received no updates regarding the project and that the council remains uninformed of any further details.

Nasru also expressed concern over the decision to construct a small mosque, despite the council having allocated a large plot of land for the project.

Furthermore, this plot of land measures 10,000 square feet, yet the mosque being built here only accommodates 250 people. This capacity is simply inadequate for modern requirements. For instance, the neighboring island of Rinbidhoo, with a population of approximately 400, is receiving a mosque designed for 500 people. Meanwhile, the work here continues to progress at a snail's pace.

The agreement to construct a mosque in Dh. Hulhudheli was signed with Elite International Private Limited in December 2023. The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, signed the agreement on behalf of the Ministry.
