The United States has identified the Maldives as one of the countries being used to reroute Chinese goods in an attempt to circumvent US trade tariffs.
India has been included in a list of over 40 countries identified as potential transit points used to illicitly funnel Chinese goods into the United States.
A new report released by the White House Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy alleges that exporters from various nations are funneling Chinese goods into the US market through third-party countries. The report highlights tactics such as rerouting shipments, relabeling products, and submitting fraudulent documentation to misrepresent the country of origin. These findings are expected to further strain diplomatic and trade relations between Washington and the countries implicated in the report.
The report characterizes these actions as a "Great Transshipment Scam," with Washington warning that it will intensify efforts to detect and penalize such activities. The Maldives has been identified among the countries used as transit points for funneling Chinese goods into the United States. In addition to the Maldives, the list includes regional and international trade partners such as Malta, Mauritius, Mexico, Morocco, and Myanmar. The US report categorizes these 40 nations into three tiers based on the nature of their economic ties with China and the level of risk they pose to the enforcement of US tariff regulations.
According to the White House, this "secret transshipment network" allows Chinese manufacturers to evade the substantial tariffs imposed on their goods by the US government. By routing shipments through intermediary nations such as the Maldives and India, companies are able to disguise the original country of origin. The report estimates that such tariff evasion by countries and corporations costs the United States billions of dollars in lost revenue annually.
