Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC) has urged broadcasters and media professionals to prioritize human dignity and the public interest when disseminating news and information.

In a statement, the Commission emphasized that reporting on various social incidents and issues in accordance with Maldivian laws and regulations is a vital individual and social responsibility for media professionals. The Commission further urged all members of the media to strictly adhere to ethical guidelines and exercise caution when reporting on matters involving children, parents, and individuals in vulnerable situations.

The Commission stated that content must be published responsibly, ensuring that the honor and dignity of all individuals are protected. It further emphasized that the identities or any identifying information of children and vulnerable persons must only be disclosed in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives, relevant laws, and regulations, and should be based strictly on information officially shared by the competent authorities.

Furthermore, the Commission emphasized the necessity of verifying the accuracy of information before publication or broadcast. It urged the public and media to refrain from spreading disinformation that could undermine social harmony and to avoid sharing unverified reports on social media. Highlighting that family matters and mental health issues are deeply sensitive, the Commission underscored the importance of reporting on such subjects responsibly to ensure that no individual suffers further psychological or social harm.

In the statement, the Commission emphasized that rather than conducting "social media trials" regarding cases involving vulnerable individuals, the most appropriate course of action is to share verified information released by relevant authorities and institutions through established legal frameworks. Furthermore, the Commission called upon all media professionals to cooperate in building a safer society by fostering a culture of responsible information dissemination.

The Commission stated that the responsibilities of relevant state institutions in safeguarding the rights of children and parents are matters of significant public interest. Consequently, the Commission emphasized that it is imperative for journalists, broadcasters, and all media professionals to uphold the dignity, privacy, and safety of these individuals when reporting their information.

The Commission stated that media outlets must refrain from using the private lives and personal information of individuals without their consent when reporting news and information. It further emphasized the importance of avoiding any publications or broadcasts that could undermine public interest.
