Government claims press freedom is guaranteed despite imprisonment of journalists!

Despite the President's assurances to uphold press freedom, recent legislative amendments allowing for the imprisonment of journalists and the imposition of heavy fines on media outlets have drawn widespread criticism. Public concern is mounting over the perceived erosion of freedom of expression, with many accusing the government of obstructing journalistic work and tightening control over the media landscape.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that his administration has ensured the broadest possible scope for press freedom.

Speaking at the official ceremony held to mark Independence Day, President Muizzu stated that journalists have previously had to rely on financial assistance from various parties to sustain their operations. The President noted that it was this administration that decided to allocate a specific percentage of the state budget to media outlets in order to bring an end to this dependency.

However, some critics allege that President Muizzu’s decision to provide state-funded financial assistance to media outlets is an attempt by the government to exert control over the press and compel them to produce pro-government coverage.

Furthermore, the President stated that the development of a "Media Village" is nearing completion to address the office rent challenges faced by media outlets, promising that space will be made available at affordable rates. He noted that the government has opened numerous opportunities for journalist training, including the commencement of specialized courses. Additionally, the President highlighted that during the short span of two years and eight months under this administration, a total of 72 new newspapers have been registered.

The development of a dedicated "Media Village" is nearing completion, aimed at liberating journalists from the financial constraints of operating out of high-rent spaces. This initiative is designed to end the dependency on external parties for funding and to break the cycle of influence that compromises journalistic independence. Once operational, the Media Village will provide media outlets with workspace at significantly subsidized rates. This facility will offer the necessary infrastructure and space to allow media organizations to expand their operations and conduct their work on a much larger scale.
President Muizzu

Despite President Muizzu’s assertions that press freedom is fully guaranteed and that journalists can report without fear or restriction, his administration has established the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission. This new body is empowered to penalize news outlets with fines of up to MVR 100,000, suspend their content, and impose individual fines on journalists. Furthermore, the commission has been granted the authority to determine the veracity of news, effectively deciding what constitutes truth or misinformation.

Furthermore, it was under the current administration that police raided the offices of the news outlet 'Adhadhu' in connection with its published content, seizing computer systems used by the organization. Additionally, Adhadhu journalist Mohamed Shahuzan was removed from the President's Office following a question he posed to President Muizzu during a press conference; he was subsequently imprisoned for 15 days in relation to that inquiry. Similarly, Leevan Ali Nasir, another journalist from the same outlet, was also jailed for a period of 10 days over an article he authored.

President Muizzu has faced widespread criticism following his Independence Day remarks claiming that press freedom is fully guaranteed in the country. The backlash stems from the public perception that while journalists play a vital role in holding the government accountable, the administration is instead penalizing those who report on its shortcomings in an attempt to silence the press and suppress freedom of expression.
