Following the government's significant defeat in the elections held on April 4, the Parliament's Government Oversight Committee on Monday approved the appointment of new ministers named in President Muizzu’s subsequent cabinet reshuffle.
The committee reviewing the appointments has unanimously approved the 14 newly sworn-in cabinet ministers, with all members present at the meeting voting in favor.
During the review of the cabinet appointments submitted for parliamentary approval, the committee decided to consolidate the cases of the 14 ministers, which had been submitted as two separate matters, into a single proceeding. The committee further resolved to hold a collective vote on the confirmation of all ministers simultaneously.
Following the cabinet reshuffle implemented by President Muizzu on the 14th and 15th of this month, the number of cabinet ministers has been reduced from 20 to 15. As part of these changes, 10 ministers resigned from their posts, while the President appointed five new ministers to the cabinet. Furthermore, nine ministers who previously served in the cabinet took their oaths of office once again, following the restructuring of their respective ministries.
In accordance with the Constitution, Cabinet ministers appointed through changes made by the President will only attain full legal authority once they have received the formal consent of the People's Majlis.
The President submitted the matter for parliamentary approval during the session held on the 20th of this month. As the relevant committee has now concluded its review, the full house will decide whether to grant approval to these ministers in an upcoming formal sitting.
