Green cover-up exposing how Maldivian politicians turned a revolutionary Constitution into an exclusive playground for privileged
7 އޯގަސްޓު 2026 | ހުކުރު 19:24Citizens are unable to realize the fundamental rights and benefits guaranteed under the 2008 Constitution due to a lack of accountability and the disregard for the rule of law by both the legislature and senior government officials. Recent instances, such as the penalization of the President’s Office and the failure to adhere to parliamentary regulations, serve as clear evidence of a systemic breakdown. Consequently, as long as those in leadership fail to set a standard of legal compliance, the public will continue to be deprived of their rightful protections

The Green Constitution, the People's Majlis, and the President's Office | raajjemv
7 August 2008, was supposed to be a monumental turning point in the democratic journey of the Maldives, marking the grand arrival of the Green Constitution, a document painted as a beacon of fresh freedom and universal justice.
It was pitched as a revolutionary overhaul designed to lock in the fundamental liberties, rights, and total equality of every single Maldivian. The overarching concept was simple enough: every drop of state authority and governing principle would trace directly back to the public, belonging to the people and moving solely through their direct involvement. On paper, it was a masterclass in governance, meticulously laying down every single rule, statutory detail, and administrative process needed to safeguard civil rights, keep the three arms of government from stepping on each other's toes, and hold institutions strictly accountable.
Paper promises versus a miserable reality for everyday people
Fast-forward to the present, and a deeply depressing reality forces us to ask whether ordinary members of the public are seeing a single shred of the perks promised by this elaborate legal blueprint. The harsh truth is an undeniable no.
Instead, we are stuck watching a pathetic spectacle where the exact figures charged with enforcing these rules with absolute precision are the very ones tearing them apart and shredding the rule of law.
Majlis becomes a playground for rule-breakers
Take the People’s Majlis, an institution that ought to stand as the ultimate fortress of legal purity.
It has instead degenerated into a playground where regulations are rewritten or completely tossed aside whenever it aligns with selfish political schemes. It is wildly mind-boggling that politicians can churn out ironclad restrictions and workplace mandates for standard civil servants and ordinary workers, however these same legislative authors blatantly snub the exact principles they force down everyone else's throats.
Schedules tossed out as Majlis takes illegal time off
Sittings within parliament are routinely conducted and attended with total contempt for standard operational protocols, taking place only when it happens to be convenient for the politicians.
Even though both the Constitution itself and the explicit Standing Orders of the Majlis lay out precise timetables and official hours for sittings, sticking to their own written instructions means next to nothing to lawmakers today.
Whenever the mood strikes them, the Majlis is shut down for months on end without a single thread of legitimate legal justification.
Sweet talk from above leaves ordinary citizens empty-handed
While political figures love to gush publicly about the delicious rewards born from the Green Constitution, everyday citizens are left with a reality completely barren of any meaningful advancement or actual advantages.
This massive failure does not stem from some inherent defect in the foundational text or the statutes themselves, but rather from a total absence of accountability among the political figures and lawmakers who were trusted to maintain them.
It does not matter how many vibrant amendments or trendy legislative overhauls they parade around; the rights of the populace will remain entirely unprotected until the mindset and behavior of these individuals undergo complete overhaul.
Executive lawlessness leaves the highest office in total disgrace
The sheer depth of this national mess is showcased by the bizarre situation in which the President’s Office, the supreme seat of executive authority, finds itself getting slapped with financial penalties for stepping out of legal bounds.
When the very executive entity that is supposed to be the ultimate benchmark for statutory compliance gets fined for breaking the rules, the chaotic condition of the whole country practically screams for itself.
As a direct result, this administration is stamping its name into history as a regime that conducts business entirely outside the perimeter of the law.
Fined for hypocrisy by the information watchdog
Just recently, the Information Commissioner’s Office handed down a MVR 2,000 fine to the President’s Office, ruling that the premier institution tasked with setting an upright example was actively exploiting the Right to Information Act.
In a toxic climate like this, anyone with a brain must ask where the supposed treasures of our democratic system have gone.
Rules for thee but not for me breeds permanent public despair
The absolute non-negotiable bedrock of a working democracy is that top-level officials must honor the law and establish an impeccable standard for the public to follow.
It is completely unfair to demand total statutory obedience from everyday citizens while ruling elites get away with acting like they are totally untouchable.
For as long as this outrageous double standard stays alive, capturing the complete rights and liberties promised on paper will remain a total pipe dream, leaving the public trapped in an ongoing state of helplessness, bitterness, and complete disenfranchisement.
