Police announce gatherings held outside of designated areas will not be permitted
The Maldives Police Service has urged the public to refrain from holding protests outside of designated areas, citing increasing complaints regarding disruptions to public transport and local businesses in Malé. Authorities warned that they will disperse unauthorized gatherings and take legal action against organizers of unlawful protests. However, the police statement reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of peaceful demonstrations conducted within the bounds of the law.

The police have announced that they will not permit protests held outside of designated areas that infringe upon the rights of the general public.
In a statement released Thursday night, the Maldives Police Service noted that they have been receiving numerous complaints regarding ongoing protests on several streets in Malé. These demonstrations have led to road closures, causing significant disruptions to public transportation, pedestrians, motorists, and local businesses.
The police statement further noted that under the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act, organizers of gatherings and protests are required to respect public safety, transportation systems, and the rights of others. Consequently, the authorities have urged individuals to exercise their constitutional rights in a manner that does not infringe upon the rights of fellow citizens.
In a statement, the police clarified that under Section 24(f) of the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act, any gathering or march in Male' can only be held in areas specifically designated by the Ministry of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology, unless prior written permission is obtained from the police.
The police have stated that they will not permit gatherings held outside of designated areas that infringe upon the rights of the general public. Furthermore, the Maldives Police Service emphasized that they will continue to take all necessary measures to protect public interest. This includes dispersing illegal gatherings and taking legal action against those who organize such events.
The police have stated that while the right to peaceful assembly is a fundamental right guaranteed under Article 32 of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives, such gatherings must be conducted in a peaceful manner that ensures public safety and respects the rights and freedoms of others.
The police stated that the Maldives Police Service will provide the necessary safety and security for activities conducted in accordance with the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act. In this regard, the police assured that they would manage traffic in areas where such gatherings and marches take place and implement all required security arrangements.
