MDP submits resolution alleging political dismissals are being disguised as workforce reductions
Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency, Mauroof Zakir, has submitted a resolution to the People’s Majlis calling for an end to the dismissal of state-owned enterprise employees, alleging the moves are politically motivated. The resolution asserts that under the guise of cost-cutting measures, the government is penalizing and terminating staff who do not support the administration in violation of the Constitution and the Employment Act. Furthermore, the resolution highlights that the government is unjustly defaming those dismissed by falsely accusing them of theft and dishonesty.

A resolution has been submitted to the People’s Majlis alleging that the government is using cost-cutting measures and workforce optimization as a pretext to carry out politically motivated dismissals across state-owned enterprises.
The resolution was introduced during Wednesday's People's Majlis session by Mauroof Zakir, the Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency. In the resolution, MP Mauroof highlighted that Article 20 of the Constitution of the Maldives mandates that every individual is equal before the law and is entitled to equal protection and benefit of the law. He further emphasized that the equal application of the law and the right to receive its benefits without discrimination is a fundamental right guaranteed to every citizen.
The resolution notes that Article 37 (a) of the Constitution stipulates that every citizen has the right to engage in any employment or occupation of their choice.
Furthermore, the resolution highlights that Section 21 of the Employment Act stipulates that an employee shall not be dismissed unless there is a reasonable cause. This applies to instances where, despite measures taken to improve an employee's performance or conduct, they continue to fail in fulfilling their professional ethics or responsibilities essential to the proper functioning of the workplace.
The resolution states that although a significant amount of time has passed since the government announced its decision to reduce the workforce of state-owned enterprises by 33 percent, no actions have been taken toward this goal with sincerity, transparency, or fairness. The member also expressed deep concern over the sudden dismissal of a large number of employees currently taking place.
They are:
- It is no coincidence that those being dismissed from their jobs are exclusively individuals expressing dissent against this administration and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, as well as those participating in the political activities of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
- The dismissal of these employees is being carried out without the valid grounds required under the Employment Act.
- These actions are being carried out in total disregard of established norms, principles, laws, and regulations, while further violating the internal policies and procedures of the companies involved.
- At a time when the national economy is in decline and citizens are facing increasing financial hardship, the mass dismissal of employees will have a direct and adverse financial impact on a significant number of low-income households.
The member stated that while the government is openly carrying out these actions and the public is bearing the resulting hardships and burdens, the administration continues to deny the reality of the situation.
The resolution states that during a press conference held on June 29, the Head of State denied these allegations and asserted that only those involved in theft or the destruction of state assets were being dismissed. By leveling such false accusations against numerous citizens, it is evident that the President has violated the constitutional oath taken in the name of Almighty Allah to protect the rights of the people.
Mauroof stated that the government's decision to reduce the workforce of state-owned enterprises as a cost-cutting measure appears to be being exploited as a means of penalizing those who do not support the administration.
