Fisheries Ministry to Redevelop Male’ Fish Market, Hand It Back to City Council

The Male' City Council has passed a resolution to hand over the redevelopment of the local fish market to the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, under an agreement that the facility will be returned to the council upon completion.

During an emergency meeting of the Male' City Council on Monday, a resolution was proposed to hand over the Male' City Wet Market project to the Ministry of Fisheries, under the condition that the facility be returned to the council upon completion of its development.

The resolution was passed with 11 votes in favor from the 16 councilors present at the meeting.

Male' City Mayor Adam Azim has stated that the current fish market is not an ideal location for selling fish, noting that concerns have also been raised regarding the safety and hygiene standards of the facility.

The resolution states that the wet market will be constructed on a plot of land exceeding 17,000 square feet, located in the local market area opposite the Male' Fish Market. The project is scheduled for completion within 30 months, after which the facility must be handed back to the City Council.

Furthermore, the Male' City Council stated that physical work on the project will commence only after temporary stalls have been arranged for the vendors currently operating in the area.

During President Muizzu's tenure as Mayor, the redevelopment of the Male' Fish Market was awarded to two parties at a high cost. This matter has also been submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for investigation.
