The Male' City Council has announced its decision to formulate a special regulation for private waste collection services within the capital.
During Wednesday's official meeting of the Male' City Council, Faruhaan Shafeeu, the Councilor for the Machangolhi South constituency, highlighted the increasing volume of waste generated by businesses in the capital. He noted that the absence of a robust regulatory framework for waste management service providers is leading to significant challenges.
Consequently, Councilor Shafeeu has submitted a proposal to resolve this issue.
The proposal mandates that private waste collection service providers register with the council and renew their registration annually. It also includes a provision to schedule waste collection hours to minimize traffic congestion. Furthermore, the proposal requires waste collection vehicles to clearly display the company name and registration number, while also calling for more stringent safety standards.
Furthermore, the proposal mandates that waste be properly sealed and stored in a manner that prevents any spillage onto the streets.
The proposal also includes measures such as the suspension or cancellation of registrations and the imposition of fines for those who fail to comply with these regulations.
All council members expressed their support for the proposal. Furthermore, it was decided to forward the matter to the council’s Waste Management Committee to draft the necessary regulations.
