MDP postpones protest to the night of August 13

Set to commence in front of the Social Center, the rally was organized following a National Council decision to provide a platform for citizens to voice their grievances over the escalating economic hardships.

The main opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has rescheduled its planned protest against the rising cost of living and the increasing hardships faced by the public to the night of August 13.
In a social media post on Wednesday, the MDP announced that the date and time for its upcoming protest, titled "Dathivejje" (Hardship), have been rescheduled. The party stated that the demonstration will now take place on Thursday night, August 13, at 8:30 p.m. The protest is scheduled to commence on Majeedhee Magu, in front of the Social Centre.
During the MDP National Council meeting held on Sunday, the party's Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed, who presided over the session, proposed staging protests against the rising cost of living and the government's perceived incompetence.
Presiding over the session, Speaker Nasheed stated that he did not believe a formal vote was necessary to determine whether to proceed with the protest. He expressed confidence that MDP members would fully support the decision to demonstrate.
With a protest scheduled for August 13, the MDP recently held a gathering in Malé under the slogan "Employment Thursday."
