The main opposition party, MDP, has stated that operations at Maldives Ports Limited (MPL)—one of the most vital institutions in the Maldivian economy—have come to a standstill, leading to significant challenges in cargo clearance.
Speaking at a press conference held by the MDP Transport and Tourism Committee on Wednesday, Mohamed Raee, a member of the party’s National Congress and former representative for the Makunudhoo constituency, stated that Maldives Ports Limited (MPL)—the nation’s primary gateway for essential imports—is currently "paralyzed."
He stated that the port's operations are not functioning effectively, causing significant hardships for businessmen in unloading their goods.
Highlighting financial constraints and a lack of resources, Raee stated that the primary cause of the issue is the company's lack of operational funds to manage the port. He further noted that the company does not have the necessary capital to acquire essential equipment, such as cargo barges, reach stackers, and cranes.
The fundamental issue is that the port lacks both the necessary equipment and the financial resources required to sustain its operations.Mohamed Raee
Raee alleged that the net profit margins of Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) have significantly declined since the current administration took office. He stated that the company's financial records clearly reflect this downturn, describing it as a major threat to the economy.
Furthermore, Raee spoke at length, highlighting the underlying causes behind the rising cost of goods.
Raee stated that while many citizens point the finger at businesses, the root cause is the failure of Maldives Ports Limited (MPL). He noted that delays and difficulties in clearing goods from the port are negatively impacting commodity prices.
Raee stated that the decline of economically vital institutions such as Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) poses a significant detriment to both the public and the business community, emphasizing that urgent measures are required to rectify these issues.
