MDP to take to the streets on August 13 due to genuine hardships: Raee

Coinciding with "Black Friday," the party highlighted that gross mismanagement and inefficiencies at the national port have driven commodity prices to record highs, sparking widespread public outcry.

Former Member of Parliament for the Makunudhoo constituency, Mohamed Raee, has stated that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is taking to the streets for a protest on August 13 because the public is facing genuine hardships.
Speaking at a press conference held by the MDP on Wednesday, Raee stated that it was a mere coincidence that the date chosen for the protest aligned with August 12 and 13, known as "Black Friday." He further noted that these dates hold significant historical importance for the party.
Raee stated that Economic Minister Saeed, along with members of parliament from the ruling PNC and government allies, have expressed significant concern since the protest was announced and discussions began regarding the rising cost of living and the resulting hardships faced by the public.
Raee acknowledged the widespread public concern regarding price hikes by businesses, noting that, in reality, merchants are left with no other choice. He further highlighted that businesses are forced to increase prices due to the prevailing inefficiencies within the port operations.
I would like to highlight three basic items for every mother and father to consider regarding current price hikes. Reflect on the cost of the items you regularly purchase: the price of a pack of diapers and the soaring cost of a tin of milk. Most disheartening is a daily necessity for every parent—buying a packet of Milo for their children to take to school. By the end of our administration, a Milo packet cost 4 Rufiyaa; today, it is being sold for 7 or even 8 Rufiyaa. I believe that by the end of the remaining four months of this year, the price will escalate to 12 Rufiyaa.Mohamed Raee
Furthermore, Rai noted that while petrol is available for vehicles in Malé at 16 Rufiyaa per liter, fishing vessels and other boats are unable to obtain it at that same rate.
Following a press conference held on Wednesday, the MDP announced the official commencement of its protest activities.
