Former Member of Parliament for the Ihavandhoo constituency, Mohamed Shifau, has stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu himself is unaware of the actual market rate of the U.S. Dollar, despite the administration's repeated assurances that the exchange rate would not rise.
Speaking at the "Dhathivejje" pickup rally held by the MDP on Saturday, Shifau stated that while President Muizzu and his administration are looting the state treasury at will, the Maldivian people are left in a state of severe distress. Shifau further asserted that the President lacks the competence to manage both the nation's finances and the economy, claiming that the current situation is a clear reflection of this failure.
Shifau stated that the current Constitution was achieved by the Maldivian people with profound aspirations. He noted that the Constitution was established to secure numerous rights and advancements that were previously sought, transitioning to a system of governance by the people; he further asserted that Maldivians will remain steadfast in protecting the rights guaranteed under this framework.
Noting that the cost of living has surged well beyond affordable levels, Shifau stated that even the President himself is unaware of the current market exchange rate for the dollar.
Just as the youth were brought to their knees in handcuffs, the people are now being forced into a state of beggary. Today, the public is left with no choice but to resort to panhandling, as their earnings are no longer sufficient to meet even their most basic needs. Dr. Muizzu is leading the Maldivian people into a system of enslavement under an authoritarian and malicious leadership. Dr. Muizzu intends to reshape the citizenry by ensuring that their income remains inadequate for basic necessities, thereby forcing them to beg politicians for survival.Mohamed Shifau
Shifau stated that history has consistently shown Maldivians possess the courage to stand up and demand their rights. He noted that Maldivians will not remain idle at home when their rights are stripped away and they are faced with hunger. He further emphasized that the reason citizens are taking to the streets on August 13 is due to the loss of their fundamental rights.
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced that its upcoming protest, titled "Dathivejje" (Hardship), will be held on Thursday night, August 13, at 8:30 PM. The party stated that the demonstration is being organized to voice concerns over the rising cost of living and the increasing economic challenges faced by the public. The protest is scheduled to commence on Majeedhee Magu, in front of the Social Centre.
