MDP to take to the streets for protest on August 12

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced its decision to hold a protest in Male' on August 12.
During the MDP National Congress meeting held on Sunday night, the party’s Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed, presiding over the session, proposed holding a protest on that date. The proposal put forward by the chair calls for a demonstration against the rising cost of living and the government's perceived policy failures.
Presiding over the session, Nasheed stated that he did not believe a vote was necessary to determine whether a protest should be held. He expressed confidence that MDP members would fully support the decision to demonstrate.
While the MDP has scheduled a protest in Malé for Wednesday, August 12, the party has also recently held several other gatherings in the capital. These include a demonstration organized under the theme "Employment Thursday." Prior to these events, the MDP also staged protests in Malé titled "In Defense of the Constitution" and "Looted."
Police used excessive force during the "Lootuvaifi" protest organized by the MDP on October 3, 2025. This disproportionate response resulted in injuries to numerous protesters. Furthermore, several members of the MDP were taken into custody and imprisoned during the demonstration.
