The Maldives' decentralization system is currently facing its darkest days, stated Shamau Shareef, the former Deputy Mayor of Male' City.

Speaking to the press following a meeting between the MDP’s Decentralization Committee and the Local Government Authority (LGA), Shamau stated that every administration, with the exception of the two terms served by the MDP, has consistently moved to strip away the powers previously granted to the people.

Shamau further stated that the parliamentary efforts undertaken between 2006 and 2008 were aimed at empowering the citizens. He noted that under these principles, the malpractices previously carried out in Male' by the former Atolls Ministries were brought to a halt during that period.

However, Shamau noted that the Local Government Authority (LGA) is currently operating in a manner reminiscent of the former Ministry of Atolls Administration, acting solely according to their own preferences. He further emphasized that Article 230 of the Constitution mandates that administrative divisions must be managed through a decentralized system, asserting that neither the President nor any other individual has the authority to alter this constitutional requirement.

Shamau further asserted that the government's actions are driven by political motives intended to benefit a specific group of people. He also called upon all Maldivian citizens and councilors to join the MDP's Decentralization Committee in their efforts to address and resolve this issue.

The government has stated that its decision to abolish atoll councils is aimed at reducing expenditures. However, many are expressing concern, alleging that this does not reflect the administration's true intentions.
