Mauroof Zakir, the Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency, has called on the public to take to the streets in protest against the ongoing dismissals of employees by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.

Speaking at the "Employment Thursday" panel discussion hosted by the MDP on Thursday, Member Mauroof addressed the ongoing dismissals of employees from state-owned enterprises, asserting that seeking redress through the Employment Tribunal would not provide a solution to the issue.

Member Mauroof stated that it could take approximately 11 years to conclude a case through the Employment Tribunal and receive the resulting compensation.

The member stated that decisions made by the tribunal would be appealed, potentially escalating to the High Court and the Supreme Court. He further noted that such a course of action would not provide a lasting solution.

Highlighting the protests following the dismissal of employees at the Fenaka branch in Lh. Kurendhoo, the member stated that such issues can only be resolved by taking to the streets in this manner.

We cannot simply remain idle while complaining about the rising cost of living; we must take direct action. We need to engage in direct action to bring about change. This power lies within our hands, and if we fail to act now, we will inevitably face far more dire circumstances in the future.
Mauroof Zakir

Furthermore, Mauroof stated that there are currently approximately 14,000 unemployed individuals. He noted that despite this, the government is planning to dismiss an additional 14,000 people from their jobs. He added that this situation clearly reflects the current economic state of the country.

The main opposition party, MDP, recently staged a protest titled "Employment Thursday" to voice concerns over the dismissal of employees from state-owned enterprises under President Muizzu's administration.
