Current stormy weather across the Maldives expected to clear by Sunday: MMS

The Maldives Meteorological Service has stated that the current spell of bad weather across the country is expected to clear up starting Sunday.

Providing the latest weather updates to RaajjeTV, meteorologist Abdulla Hafiz stated that the current rainy spell across the Maldives is expected to subside starting tomorrow afternoon. However, Hafiz noted that the weather is only likely to clear up fully by Sunday. He further explained that the Maldives is not the only South Asian nation affected, as neighboring India and Sri Lanka—particularly southern parts of India—are also experiencing the impact of this weather system. The Maldives Meteorological Service also attributed the ongoing inclement weather across the region to wind convergence.

The Maldives Meteorological Service has extended a yellow weather alert for a large part of the country for the third consecutive time, citing deteriorating weather conditions. The initial yellow alert was issued this morning, effective from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm. However, after an initial extension until 7:30 pm, the weather office has once again pushed the advisory period further, with the current alert now remaining in effect until 12:30 am tonight.

According to the Maldives Meteorological Service, wind speeds are expected to range between 25 and 30 mph from 19:30 tonight until 00:30, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph and rough seas anticipated. As the current rainfall across the Maldives is part of the southwest monsoon, the authority has urged seafarers to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant of weather conditions, as sea conditions are expected to be hazardous.
