Heavy rain forecast for central and southern Maldives

The Maldives Meteorological Service has forecasted deteriorating weather conditions for the central and southern atolls over the next 24 hours, with wind speeds expected to gust up to 45 mph. A white alert has been issued for the region spanning Laamu Atoll to Addu City, though authorities anticipate conditions will improve after Monday. Consequently, relevant agencies have urged the public, particularly seafarers, to exercise caution and remain vigilant during this period.

The Maldives Meteorological Service has forecast deteriorating weather conditions across the country, with heavy rainfall expected in parts of the central and southern atolls.

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fashaairu" program on Sunday, Assistant Meteorologist Abdulla Hafiz stated that weather conditions are expected to deteriorate across the Maldives over the next 24 hours. He noted that heavy rainfall is primarily forecasted for central and southern atolls. Furthermore, wind speeds are expected to gust up to 45 mph during squalls.

Hafiz stated that while winds are not expected to be as strong in the south, central and northern atolls will experience average wind speeds between 14 and 16 miles per hour. He further noted that weather conditions in the north are not expected to deteriorate significantly.

Looking at the northern regions, weather conditions are not expected to be particularly severe today. It is anticipated that the north will only experience occasional light showers. Over the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall is primarily expected to affect the central and southern atolls of the Maldives.

Referring to the Male' region, Hafiz stated that while intermittent showers are expected on Sunday, heavy rainfall is unlikely. He added that the skies will remain generally overcast.

While weather conditions across the Maldives are expected to improve after Monday, Male' City experienced severe windstorms and torrential rain on Saturday, leading to several incidents. Authorities responded to multiple maritime emergencies, as well as flooding in streets and residential properties. Additionally, several large trees were uprooted in Hulhumale' due to the onset of the harsh weather.

Additionally, a white alert has been issued from Laamu Atoll to Addu City, effective from 8:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. this Sunday.

Authorities have urged the public to exercise heightened caution as weather conditions continue to deteriorate across the region.

Heavy rain floods islands, damages property across Maldives

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has been deployed to drain floodwaters in G.Dh. Madaveli and parts of Addu City following heavy rainfall across the country, which also caused structural damage and unroofed several homes in Hithadhoo. While Gan in Addu City recorded the highest rainfall, the Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) forecasts continued thundery showers and moderate seas over the next 24 hours. Looking ahead to the monsoon season, the Met Office predicts that while rainfall in June is expected to be lower than in May, precipitation levels are likely to increase again throughout July.
