Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency, Mauroof Zakir, has leveled sharp criticism against the government, asserting that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s policies are inflicting irreparable damage on both the state and the Maldivian people.
Speaking during a televised talk show, MP Mauroof stated that he does not believe the public should have to wait for the full five-year presidential term to conclude, given the current severe deterioration of the country's situation.
Referring to the suspension of development projects across the Maldives, MP Mauroof stated that these initiatives have come to a standstill because the government has failed to settle outstanding payments to the contractors. He further noted that the administration has failed to introduce any new measures to boost national revenue, asserting that the government's sole strategy has been to increase taxes.
MP Mauroof described the tax hike as a move that would dismantle the country's major businesses.
Decisions have been made without any regard for global trends. For instance, the substantial hike in airport taxes and duties has significantly impacted tourist arrivals to the Maldives. Therefore, I strongly agree that the current issues stem from the individual we elected as leader. We must recognize that just because we entrust someone with the presidency for a five-year term, it does not mean the Constitution mandates they must remain in power for the full duration regardless of the circumstances.Mauroof Zakir
Speaking on the system of governance, Mauroof stated that if the country’s situation deteriorates to an extreme level and the public continues to suffer significant daily losses, a change must be sought. The member further asserted that every day under President Muizzu’s administration results in a substantial loss for the Maldivian people.
The member further stated that the Maldivian people must seek an alternative to escape this immense damage, warning that remaining in this situation until 2028 poses a significant threat to the nation. He noted that the hardships faced by citizens, both economically and socially, are increasing daily due to the government's incompetence.
