The Member of Parliament for North Galolhu constituency, Mohamed Ibrahim has expressed profound concern over parliamentary committees concluding sessions in as little as five minutes to claim allowances, while critical public interest issues remain unresolved.
Speaking at Wednesday's parliamentary sitting, MP Ibrahim emphasized that as the government implements significant policy shifts, it is essential to consult with relevant stakeholders. He further asserted that policies must be formulated with enough stability and foresight to avoid the need for sudden reversals.
The member further stated that numerous issues of public concern are currently piling up in parliamentary committees. In this regard, he highlighted challenges regarding water and sewerage services, the dollar shortage, and the skyrocketing cost of living.
Furthermore, the member highlighted several serious issues within the healthcare sector, including blood shortages and the fabrication of fraudulent certificates.
Criticizing the current conduct of parliamentary proceedings, the Member stated that crucial public issues are being neglected while committee meetings are being concluded in as little as five minutes. The Member further highlighted concerns regarding the integrity of receiving full salaries and all associated benefits while operating in such a manner, questioning whether such earnings could be considered justified.
Furthermore, Ibrahim stated that as members of the parliamentary minority, they would continue to advocate for the rights of the people to the fullest extent possible. However, he described the lack of concern regarding such critical issues among members of the ruling party, which holds a supermajority in Parliament, as a significant national concern.
We are faced with numerous pressing concerns, ranging from issues with water and sewerage systems and the dollar shortage to the rising cost of living, blood shortages, and the proliferation of forged certificates. A multitude of such critical matters are currently backlogged in parliamentary committees. Yet, these issues are being neglected as committees are rushed through in just five minutes, merely to justify salaries and claim full benefits. This is deeply concerning to me. As the minority, we are doing everything within our power to raise our voices and bring attention to these matters.Mohamed Ibrahim, Member of Parliament for the North Galolhu constituency.
The member further emphasized that the Parliament must demonstrate a commitment to rectifying issues by assessing the impact of government decisions on the public. However, he noted that current observations show critical matters being dismissed and decisions being finalized without any meaningful consultation.
